Main Ingredients
  • 1 lb ground beef Browned and drained.
  • 1 packet taco seasoning Pre-mixed or homemade.
  • 1/3 cup water To help thicken the meat sauce.
  • 16 oz refried beans Warm before spreading.
  • 1/2 cup chunky salsa Adds moisture and flavor.
  • 4 cups crushed tortilla chips Used in both layers.
  • 2 cups shredded Mexican blend cheese For a bubbling top layer.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef. Cook until fully browned, breaking it apart with a spatula.
  3. Drain excess fat from the pan.
  4. Return the beef to medium heat and add the taco seasoning and water. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beef.
  5. Microwave the refried beans for about 60 seconds to warm them for easier spreading.
Assembly
  1. Spread a layer of crushed tortilla chips at the bottom of the greased baking dish.
  2. Spread the warmed refried beans over the chips.
  3. Add the seasoned ground beef on top, followed by the chunky salsa.
  4. Top with another layer of crushed tortilla chips.
  5. Sprinkle the shredded Mexican blend cheese generously over the top.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

This dish is perfect for gatherings and can be customized with your choice of toppings like sour cream or guacamole. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
