  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened Use room temperature for better texture.
  • 3 cups rolled oats Quick oats can be substituted but will change the texture.
  • 1 cup flour Can be substituted with gluten-free flour.
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts Optional, can include any type of nut.
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips Optional, can add more for sweetness.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the brown sugar, granulated sugar, and softened butter until smooth.
  3. Add the oats, flour, baking powder, and vanilla extract. Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
  4. If using, fold in the chopped nuts and chocolate chips.
  5. Spread the mixture evenly in a greased baking dish.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  2. Allow to cool before cutting into squares.

Notes

Sweet Amish Treat can be served warm or at room temperature, cut into squares. Pairs nicely with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or refrigerate for up to two weeks. Can also freeze for up to three months.
