Ingredients
  

Dough Ingredients
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F) Ensure the water is warm but not hot.
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Boiling and Topping
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten For brushing on pretzels.
  • to taste coarse salt For sprinkling on top.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and knead until smooth.
  3. Let the dough rise in a warm place for about an hour or until doubled in size.
Cooking
  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll the dough into long ropes and twist into pretzel shapes.
  3. Boil a large pot of water and add baking soda. Boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on the baking sheet.
  4. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  5. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

Best served warm. Can be enjoyed plain or with dips like mustard, cheese sauce, or chocolate. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days, or freeze for a month.
