  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar Used to activate the yeast.
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Knead well for a smooth dough.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Enhances the flavor.
  • 1/2 cup baking soda For boiling the pretzel dogs.
  • 1 egg for egg wash Gives the pretzel a golden color.
Filling
  • 8 pieces cheese hot dogs Can use regular hot dogs as a substitute.

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit until frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt; knead to form a dough.
  3. Let dough rise for 1 hour.
Cooking
  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Roll dough into strips, wrap around cheese hot dogs.
  3. Boil 4 cups of water with baking soda, then boil each pretzel dog for 30 seconds.
  4. Brush with egg wash and place on a baking sheet.
  5. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

Serve warm with mustard or cheese sauce for dipping. They can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen for up to a month. Experiment with different toppings like coarse salt, sesame seeds, or poppy seeds.
