Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 lb ground beef Use 80/20 for best flavor.
  • 1 can (15 oz) sloppy joe sauce Manwich is a popular choice.
  • 8 slices thick bread or Texas toast Thickness is essential.
  • 8 slices cheddar or American cheese Two slices per sandwich.
  • 4 tbsp butter, softened For spreading on bread.

Method

Preparation
  1. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it into fine crumbles. Drain the excess grease.
  2. Return the beef to the skillet, add the sloppy joe sauce, and simmer until the mixture thickens.
  3. Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice.
Cooking
  1. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the bread slices butter-side down in the pan.
  2. Add one slice of cheese on each piece of bread, followed by a scoop of the thick sloppy joe mixture, then top with another slice of cheese and press to complete the sandwich.
  3. Cook without moving the sandwich for 3 to 4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown.
  4. Flip the sandwich gently, pressing down with a spatula and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese is melted.
Serving
  1. Transfer the sandwich to a cutting board and let it rest for 1 minute before slicing diagonally and serving.

Notes

For best results, ensure the filling is thick to maintain structure. Can serve with tomato soup, pickles, or fries.
