Ingredients

Casserole Base
  • 1 bag frozen tater tots Use rounds for better structure if available.
Beef Mixture
  • 2 pounds ground beef Season generously with garlic powder and black pepper.
  • 2 cans sloppy joe mix
  • 1.5 jars nacho cheese sauce Warm before spreading for easier application.
Cheese Topping
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef thoroughly, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain any excess grease.
  2. Add both cans of sloppy joe mix to the skillet and stir well to combine. Allow the mixture to simmer for 2 to 3 minutes until heated through.
  3. Spread the frozen tater tots in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake at 450°F for 15 minutes until they are golden and crispy.
Building and Baking
  1. Transfer the pre-baked tater tots to the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish, arranging them in an even layer.
  2. Spoon the sloppy joe beef mixture evenly over the tots, then pour the nacho cheese sauce over the beef layer.
  3. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the nacho cheese layer.
  4. Place the casserole in a 350°F oven and bake for approximately 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is melted.
  5. Switch the oven to broil and cook for 1 to 2 minutes, watching closely. Remove once the top is golden.
  6. Allow the casserole to rest for 3 to 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Always pre-bake the tater tots for best texture. The casserole can be assembled in advance and is perfect for feeding a crowd.
