Preparation
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef thoroughly, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain any excess grease.
- Add both cans of sloppy joe mix to the skillet and stir well to combine. Allow the mixture to simmer for 2 to 3 minutes until heated through.
- Spread the frozen tater tots in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake at 450°F for 15 minutes until they are golden and crispy.
Building and Baking
- Transfer the pre-baked tater tots to the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish, arranging them in an even layer.
- Spoon the sloppy joe beef mixture evenly over the tots, then pour the nacho cheese sauce over the beef layer.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the nacho cheese layer.
- Place the casserole in a 350°F oven and bake for approximately 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is melted.
- Switch the oven to broil and cook for 1 to 2 minutes, watching closely. Remove once the top is golden.
- Allow the casserole to rest for 3 to 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
Always pre-bake the tater tots for best texture. The casserole can be assembled in advance and is perfect for feeding a crowd.
