Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional) for a sweeter sauce
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the diced tomatoes, basil, salt, and black pepper. If you prefer a sweeter sauce, include the sugar.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat and let it cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Remove from heat and garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months. For a thicker sauce, let it simmer longer. You can experiment with various herbs or add vegetables for more flavor and nutrition.
