Tostada Shells
  • 8 pieces corn tortillas Use corn tortillas for better crispiness.
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil For frying or brushing if baking.
Toppings
  • 1.5 cups refried beans, warmed Use canned or homemade.
  • 1 cup cooked ground beef, shredded chicken, or pulled pork This is optional.
  • 2 cups shredded lettuce
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup shredded cheese Cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Mexican blend.
  • 1/2 cup sour cream or Mexican crema
  • 1 piece avocado, sliced or cubed
  • 1/4 cup sliced black olives
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped For garnish.
  • lime wedges For serving.
  • Optional toppings: salsa, hot sauce, pickled jalapeños, radishes, green onions

Method

Crisp the Tortillas
  1. To fry: Heat about ½ inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, fry each tortilla one at a time for 1–2 minutes per side until golden and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  2. To bake: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Brush both sides of the tortillas with a little oil, place on a baking sheet, and bake for 5–7 minutes per side until golden and crisp.
  3. Tip: Make a batch of tostada shells ahead of time and store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Add Layers
  1. Spread a generous layer of warm refried beans on each tostada shell.
  2. If using meat, add a spoonful of cooked and seasoned ground beef, shredded chicken, or pork carnitas over the beans.
  3. Layer with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, sour cream or crema, avocado slices, olives, and fresh cilantro.
Serve
  1. Plate your tostadas and serve immediately with lime wedges and your favorite salsa.

Notes

Use leftover ingredients like grilled veggies, beans, or rotisserie chicken for an easy meal. Assemble tostadas only before serving to prevent them from becoming soggy.
