Ingredients

Dough and Cheese
  • 1 lb pizza dough Store-bought or homemade dough.
  • 1.5 cups shredded mozzarella cheese Use low moisture mozzarella for best results.
  • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese Can be substituted with cottage cheese.
Fillings and Seasoning
  • 1/2 cup pepperoni slices Can substitute with other meats if desired.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning Enhances flavor; can add garlic powder for extra taste.
Sauce
  • 1 cup marinara sauce For dipping; use homemade or store-bought.

Method

Preparation and Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Prepare a large baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or lightly greasing it.
  2. Divide the pizza dough into four equal sections. Roll or press each section into a flat circular shape.
  3. On one half of each dough circle, layer shredded mozzarella cheese and spoonfuls of ricotta cheese.
  4. Add pepperoni slices and sprinkle Italian seasoning over the filling.
  5. Fold the empty half of the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges together firmly and crimp to seal.
  6. Poke a small hole in the top of each calzone to allow steam to escape while baking.
  7. Place the calzones on the prepared baking sheet and bake until the crust turns deep golden brown and crisp.
  8. Remove from the oven and allow cooling slightly before serving.
  9. Serve warm with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

Brush the tops with olive oil before baking for a delicious crust. Customize fillings with sautéed vegetables or different cheeses. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days and reheat in the oven.
