Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, milk, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
- In a greased casserole dish, layer half of the meat mixture.
- Spread the mashed potatoes over the meat layer, then sprinkle with cheese and bacon bits (if using).
- Top with the remaining meat mixture.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until the meat is cooked through and the top is golden brown.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
Serve warm, paired with a green salad or steamed vegetables. For enhanced flavor, add a dollop of sour cream or more cheese on top. Store leftovers tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
