Method
Preparation
- Peel the onion and garlic cloves, then pulse them together in a food processor until finely minced.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef.
- Add the minced onion, garlic, and chopped green bell pepper to the skillet.
Cooking
- Cook the mixture while stirring frequently until the beef is fully browned and the vegetables become soft and fragrant.
- Carefully drain the excess fat from the skillet.
- Return the meat mixture to the heat and add the onion powder, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Stir well so the beef becomes evenly coated with the savory seasoning.
Assembly
- Slice the hoagie rolls open and lightly toast the inside in the oven or on a skillet if desired.
- Fill each roll generously with the seasoned ground beef mixture.
- Place a slice of provolone cheese over the top of the meat inside each sandwich.
- Arrange the filled hoagies on a baking sheet and place them in the oven for a few minutes until the bread becomes lightly crisp and the cheese melts completely.
Notes
To prevent the bread from becoming soggy, lightly toast the inside of the hoagie rolls with a thin layer of butter before filling them with the meat mixture. You can also add sautéed mushrooms, hot peppers, or jalapeños for a spicy twist. Other cheese options include mozzarella, cheddar, Monterey Jack, or pepper jack.
