German Apple Strudel

Main Ingredients
  • 1 package phyllo dough Thawed according to package instructions.
  • 4 cups peeled and sliced apples (such as Granny Smith) Use tart apples for best flavor.
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup melted butter For brushing the phyllo layers.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • to taste Powdered sugar for dusting Optional for serving.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples, raisins, sugar, cinnamon, breadcrumbs, and lemon juice together.
Assembling the Strudel
  1. Lay out a sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it with melted butter. Layer 5-6 sheets, brushing each one with butter.
  2. Spread the apple mixture evenly along one edge of the phyllo.
  3. Carefully roll the dough over the filling to form a log and seal the edges.
  4. Place the strudel on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the top with more melted butter.
Baking
  1. Bake for 30-40 minutes until golden brown.
  2. Allow to cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

German Apple Strudel is best served warm. Enjoy it plain or with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
