Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch (23x33 cm) baking dish with non-stick cooking spray or butter.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with the garlic salt. Stir frequently, breaking it into small crumbles until browned and cooked through.
Layering and Baking
- Evenly distribute the uncooked rice across the bottom of the prepared baking dish, then spread the cooked ground beef over the rice without mixing.
- Pour the beef consommé, French onion soup, and water over the rice and beef. Stir gently to distribute the liquid.
- Place the sliced butter evenly over the top.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- After 30 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking uncovered for another 30 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the top is golden.
- Optional: If using cheese, sprinkle over the top during the last 10 minutes of baking.
- Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. Fluff gently with a fork and serve warm.
Notes
For a spicier version, add red pepper flakes or diced jalapeños. You can also use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter dish. Adding peas, mushrooms, or sautéed bell peppers is a great way to incorporate vegetables. This casserole can be prepared ahead of time; just refrigerate and add extra baking time if baking from cold.
