Preparation
- Soak the sliced onions in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix flour, salt, pepper, and paprika.
Cooking
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pan to 375°F (190°C).
- Remove onions from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off.
- Dredge the onions in the flour mixture and shake off excess.
- Fry in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch.
- Drain on paper towels and serve hot.
Notes
Crispy Onion Strings are best served hot and fresh. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day. To re-crisp, reheat in an oven at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes. Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying and avoid overcrowding the pan. Experiment with spices in the flour for personalized flavors.
