Preparation
- Soak the sliced onions in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix flour, salt, pepper, and paprika.
Cooking
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pan to 375°F (190°C).
- Remove onions from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off.
- Dredge the onions in the flour mixture and shake off excess.
- Fry in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch.
- Drain on paper towels and serve hot.
Notes
Crispy Onion Strings are best served hot and fresh. They can be paired with dipping sauces like ranch or barbecue. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day, and reheat in an oven at 350°F (175°C) to re-crisp.
