Ingredients

For the Pie
  • 1 piece unbaked pie crust Standard size pie crust
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder High-quality cocoa is recommended
  • 1/2 cup melted butter Let it cool slightly before mixing
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract Pure vanilla extract is ideal
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk Can be substituted with regular milk or heavy cream

Method

Preparation
  1. Unroll the dough and press it firmly into a standard glass pie dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, and flour until well combined.
  3. Pour in the melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and evaporated milk. Stir until completely smooth.
  4. Pour the dark batter straight into the unbaked pie crust.
Baking
  1. Bake in a preheated oven until the outer ring is set but the very middle still shakes slightly.
  2. Leave the pie to cool on the counter to thicken before cutting.
Serving
  1. Serve warm, optionally with ice cream, whipped cream, or fresh berries.

Notes

Do not overbake the pie to achieve the lava effect. Let the pie rest for a few minutes after baking for the molten center to develop.
