Ingredients
  

For the Caramel
  • 1 cup sugar This forms the base layer of caramel.
  • 1 cup water Used to help dissolve the sugar.
For the Flan Mixture
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk Creates a creamy texture.
  • 1 can evaporated milk Adds richness to the flan.
  • 3 large eggs Bind the mixture together.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Enhances the flavor.
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped chocolate Optional for added chocolate richness.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a saucepan, combine sugar and water and cook until it turns golden brown to make caramel.
  3. Pour this caramel into a round baking dish and set aside.
  4. In a blender, combine sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, vanilla, and chocolate (if using). Blend until smooth.
  5. Pour the mixture over the caramel in the baking dish.
Baking
  1. Place the baking dish in a larger pan filled with water (this is called a water bath) and bake for about 1 hour, or until set.
Cooling and Serving
  1. Let it cool, then refrigerate for a few hours.
  2. To serve, carefully invert onto a plate.

Notes

Garnish with whipped cream or fresh fruit if desired. Store in the refrigerator covered for about 3 to 5 days.
