  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Make sure it's softened but not melted.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Can be substituted with gluten-free flour.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups chocolate chips Consider mixing dark and milk chocolate chips.
  • 1 cup caramel sauce You can replace with chocolate sauce or fruit compote.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  4. Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt; gradually blend into the creamed mixture.
  5. Fold in the chocolate chips.
Baking
  1. Spread half of the dough into the prepared baking pan.
  2. Pour the caramel sauce on top, then drop the remaining dough by spoonfuls over the caramel.
  3. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  4. Allow to cool before cutting into squares and serving.

Notes

Best enjoyed warm or at room temperature. Serve plain or with vanilla ice cream. Can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days at room temperature, 1 week in the fridge, or frozen for up to 3 months.
