Ingredients
  

For the onion
  • 1 large large onion Choose a large, firm onion for the best results.
  • 1 cup buttermilk Soak the onion for 30 minutes.
  • Oil for frying Oil for frying Use a thermometer to check the oil temperature.
For the coating
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper Increase for more spiciness if desired.
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs Use seasoned breadcrumbs for added flavor.
For serving
  • Creamy dipping sauce (e.g. ranch or spicy mayo) Pairs perfectly with the Bloomin' Onion.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Cut the top off the onion and peel it.
  2. Slice the onion from the top to the bottom in a star pattern, making sure not to slice all the way through.
  3. Soak the prepared onion in buttermilk for 30 minutes.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.
  5. Remove the onion from the buttermilk and coat it thoroughly in the flour mixture, ensuring it gets into all the crevices.
  6. Then coat it in breadcrumbs.
Cooking
  1. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot.
  2. Carefully lower the onion into the hot oil and fry until golden and crispy, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. It's best eaten within a day or two. Reheat in the oven or an air fryer for crispiness. Experiment with different spices in the flour mixture for unique flavors.
