Preparation
- Cut the top off the onion and peel it.
- Slice the onion from the top to the bottom in a star pattern, making sure not to slice all the way through.
- Soak the prepared onion in buttermilk for 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.
- Remove the onion from the buttermilk and coat it thoroughly in the flour mixture, ensuring it gets into all the crevices.
- Then coat it in breadcrumbs.
Cooking
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot.
- Carefully lower the onion into the hot oil and fry until golden and crispy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Remove and drain on paper towels.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. It's best eaten within a day or two. Reheat in the oven or an air fryer for crispiness. Experiment with different spices in the flour mixture for unique flavors.
