Ingredients
  

For the Sandwich
  • 4 pieces onion buns Aromatic and slightly sweet, essential for authenticity.
  • 1 lb thin deli roast beef Quality matters; ask for premium thin-sliced roast beef.
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese sauce Store-bought or homemade for a richer experience.
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or au jus Use good quality beef broth or homemade au jus.
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter For toasting the buns.
  • 1/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper Simple seasoning to enhance flavor.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the salted butter and let it melt completely, swirling it to coat the pan.
Toasting the Buns
  1. Place the onion buns cut-side down in the melted butter and press gently with a spatula.
  2. Toast for approximately 2 minutes until golden brown.
  3. Remove the buns and set aside on a plate.
Cooking the Beef
  1. Pour in the beef broth or au jus and let it heat up.
  2. Add the thin-sliced roast beef to the skillet and season with cracked black pepper.
  3. Reduce heat to medium and let simmer for 3 minutes, turning occasionally.
Heating the Cheese Sauce
  1. Pour the cheddar cheese sauce into a small saucepan over low heat.
  2. Whisk continuously for about 1 minute until smooth and just beginning to bubble.
Assembly
  1. Using tongs, lift the beef from the broth and let excess liquid drip off.
  2. Pile the beef onto the bottom half of each toasted onion bun.
  3. Pour a generous drizzle of the hot cheddar sauce over the beef.
  4. Place the top bun on to finish the sandwich, and serve immediately.

Notes

This sandwich is best served immediately, but components can be stored and reheated separately. Avoid soggy buns by assembling right before serving.
